چکیده

Using weak coupling methods McLerran and Venugopalan [1] expressed the parton distributions in large nuclei as correlation functions of a two dimensional Euclidean field theory. The theory has the dimensionful coupling gμ, where μ ∼ A is the valence quark color charge squared per unit area. We use a lattice regularization to investigate these correlation functions both analytically and numerically for the simplified case of SU(2) gauge theory. In weak coupling (gμL << 5), where L is the transverse size of the nucleus, the numerical results agree with the analytic lattice weak coupling results. For g2μL >> 5, no solutions exist at O(a4) where a is the lattice spacing. This suggests an ill-defined infrared behavior for the two dimensional theory. A recent proposal of McLerran et al. [16] for an analytic solution of the classical problem is discussed briefly. On sabbatical leave from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Homi Bhabha Road, Mumbai 400 005, India. Studies of parton distributions at a neutrino factory

The determination of parton distribution functions in the nucleon and nuclei is important for obtaining precise hadron-reaction cross sections, from which any new exotic signature could be found. We show that a future neutrino factory could provide important information on the parton distributions. First, a recent effort concerning the parametrization of nuclear parton distributions is explaine...

Parton Distributions in Nuclei

We discuss two topics in this talk. One is a brief overview of nuclear parton distributions, and the other is SU(2)-flavor-symmetry breaking in nuclear antiquark distributions. First, we show that nuclear structure functions F 2 (x) could be explained in a Q rescaling model with parton recombination effects. Then, nuclear gluon distributions are discussed in this parton model. We point out othe...

Gluon distributions in nuclei at small x: guidance from different models

The difference between the structure functions measured in nucleons and nuclei [1] is a very important and well known feature of the study of nuclear structure and nuclear collisions. At small values of the Bjorken variable x (< 0.01, shadowing region), the structure function F2 per nucleon turns out to be smaller in nuclei than in a free nucleon. This shadowing corresponds to a shadowing of pa...

Parton distribution functions in nuclei

Optimum nuclear parton distributions are determined by an analysis of muon and electron deep inelastic scattering data. Assuming simple A dependence and polynomial functions of x and 1−x for nuclear modification of parton distributions, we determine the initial distributions by a χ 2 analysis. Although valence-quark distributions are relatively well determined except for the small-x region, ant...

QCD at High Parton Density

The high parton density regime in deep inelastic electronproton (nucleus) scattering is characterized by small values of the Bjorken variable x = Q/s, where Q is the momentum transfer and √ s is the center of mass energy, and represents the challenge of studying the interface between the perturbative and nonperturbative QCD, with the peculiar feature that this transition is taken in a kinematic...
